iPhone 5s: dit vindt de internationale pers

In een overzicht met hands-on ervaringen gaven we al een overzicht van eerste indrukken die websites van de iPhone 5c en iPhone 5s hadden. Het embargo om een echte review van de toestellen te publiceren is inmiddels verlopen. Verschillende websites die beide telefoons uitgebreid hebben kunnen testen in het dagelijks leven hebben inmiddels reviews online gezet. In een ander artikel gaven we al een overzicht van recensies van de iPhone 5c. Nu is het tijd voor de echte reviews: in dit overzicht lees je hoe de internationale pers denkt over de iPhone 5s.

Ook zonder reviews is bekend dat de iPhone 5s qua prestaties een indrukwekkend apparaat is. AnandTech biedt misschien wel de meest uitgebreide review van de smartphone en gaat verder in op de technische kwaliteiten. Wil je meer weten over de prestaties van de 64-bit chip, dan ben je op deze website aan het juiste adres. De nieuwe telefoon is razendsnel en maakt van de iPhone 4 nu wel echt een ouderwets toestel:

Even compared to a relatively modern phone like the iPhone 4, the jump to a 5s is huge. The gap isn’t quite at the level of an order of magnitude, but it’s quickly approaching it. Using the single core iPhone 4 under iOS 7 just feels incredibly slow. Starting with the 4S things get a lot better, but I’d say the iPhone 4 is at the point now where it’s starting to feel too slow even for normal consumers (at least with iOS 7 installed).

Na vele pagina’s van zeer technische informatie komt Anandtech tot de conclusie dat de iPhone 5s duidelijk veel sneller is dan zijn voorganger:

Web browsing is ultimately where I noticed the A7’s performance the most. As long as I was on a good internet connection, web pages just appeared after resolving DNS. The A7’s GPU performance is also insanely good – more than enough for anything you could possibly throw at the iPhone 5s today, and fast enough to help keep this device feeling quick for a while.

TechCrunch noemt Touch ID zeker geen gimmick, maar een sterk onderdeel van de nieuwe telefoon. De slowmotionfunction vinden ze geweldig en ook over de algemene kwaliteit van de camera aan beide zijden is men positief:

I do take a lot of pictures, and generally speaking I carry at least an advanced pocket camera like the Sony RX100. But Apple’s really done some amazing work here; the quality of still captures from this phone is excellent, as you can see from the unedited examples below. The FaceTime HD camera on the front is also much better for making video calls, which will also help make FaceTime a more enjoyable experience.

Ook Engadget is onder de indruk van de camers in de iPhone 5s:

The new camera is an evolutionary but much appreciated step forward compared to the iPhone 5. Low light performance is undoubtedly better, and Apple presents its users with an interesting balance of spatial resolution and low light sensitivity.

Hoewel het systeem niet helemaal perfect is en bijvoorbeeld niet met natte vingers werkt, is Touch ID volgens Engadget een uitstekende toevoeging aan de smartphone.

And it is indeed fast: the scanner was able to pick up all of our fingers in fractions of a second and from any angle. It’s so natural, in fact, that we almost forgot that passwords and unlock screens even existed on the 5s; on countless occasions we tried to unlock the iPhone 5 and 5c with the scanner before realizing that we had to use the “old-fashioned” slide-to-unlock method.

Jim Dalrymple van The Loop zegt onder de indruk te zijn van Touch ID, de vingerafdrukscanner van de iPhone 5s:

It was almost immediate. It’s much quicker than entering in the passcode manually and all I have to do is rest my thumb on the Home button, which contains the fingerprint sensor. In addition to the speed, the location of the sensor is key. There is no extra movement needed to activate fingerprint reading

Dalrymple zegt dat de 64-bits-architectuur Apple een voorsprong geeft in de markt. Technisch gezien vindt hij de iPhone 5s indrukwekkend.

The iPhone 5s is a brilliant phone with some great new features that help you in work and play. The fingerprint sensor, camera, and improved speed and architecture, make the 5s my favorite iPhone to date.

Net als veel andere sites vindt AllThingsD dat Touch ID een echte toevoeging is:

It sounds like a gimmick, but it’s a real advance, the biggest step ever in biometric authentication for everyday devices. After using Touch ID, I found it annoying to go back to typing in passcodes on my older iPhone.

Volgens de New York Times biedt de nieuwe camera duidelijk voordelen ten opzichte van zijn voorgangers:

The new camera will mean more to you. Its sensor is 15 percent bigger, and the individual light-detecting pixels are bigger. Take photos side-by-side with the iPhone 5S’s predecessor, and the difference is immediately obvious; lowlight pictures are far better on the new phone. Clearer, brighter, better color.

Cnet is enthousiast over de nieuwe camera, Touch ID en de snelle processor, maar zet ook een aantal kanttekeningen bij de iPhone 5s:

External design is identical to that of the iPhone 5, including a 4-inch screen that looks downright tiny next to Android competitors. For now, the fingerprint sensor only works with Apple apps. The 64-bit A7 processor and M7 motion-tracking chip don’t have killer apps yet.

Op de website van USA Today wordt nog eens benadrukt dat Touch ID veel potentieel heeft:

Apple hasn’t opened up Touch ID yet to outside app developers, something I’d like to see happen sooner than later. The company has also delayed release of a feature called iCloud Keychain that would let you store all your Web passwords in the cloud. So in the future you might be able to use your fingerprint to get past all your Web passwords, making Touch ID potentially more powerful.

Het voordeel van een 64-bits-chip zal veel consumenten misschien niet veel zeggen, maar is volgens USA Today toch een enorme stap voorwaarts:

Consumers may not see much immediate benefit out of the 64-bit processing power in the 5s, the first mainstream smartphone to achieve that computing milestone. But the phone is faster, and you’ll likely see improvements playing certain games, or when you’re processing images. Developers are drooling over 64-bit.
