Eerder deze maand kondigde Apple de dienst Apple Music Classical eindelijk aan en maakte de app als pre-order beschikbaar in de App Store. Had je hem via de pre-order alvast besteld, dan wordt de app automatisch op je iPhone gedownload. Maar ook als je de pre-order gemist hebt, kun je de Apple Music Classical-app gratis downloaden en beginnen met luisteren als je Apple Music-abonnee bent.

Apple Classical voor klassieke muziek

Apple Classical is ontstaan uit de overname van Primephonic, een Nederlandse dienst die gespecialiseerd was in klassieke muziek. Apple beloofde na de overname dat de techniek en interface gebruikt zou worden voor een nieuwe app. Nu is het eindelijk zover en kunnen we ervaren hoe de Apple Classical-app eruit ziet. Gek genoeg is er op dit moment alleen een iPhone-app, later gevolgd door een versie voor Android. Over een iPad-app is nog niets bekendgemaakt, evenals een eventuele versie voor de Mac of Apple TV. Primephonic had destijds wel een tablet- en webversie. Vermoedelijk komt Apple op een later moment nog met een versie voor andere Apple-apparaten.

Om Apple Music Classical te kunnen gebruiken, heb je het volgende nodig:

• Actief Apple Music-abonnemen (individueel, gezin, student of als onderdeel van Apple One)

Zo krijg je Apple Music Classical gratis

Abonnees van Apple Music krijgen gratis toegang tot Apple Music Classical. Je hoeft er dus niets extra voor te betalen. Het werkt ook voor alle gezinsleden als je een gezinsabonnement hebt. Heb je nog niet eerder een abonnement op Apple Music gehad, dan kun je gebruik maken van de gratis proefperiode. Deze varieert van 1 tot 6 maanden, afhankelijk van de situatie. Bij aankoop van AirPods of een ander muziekgerelateerd product krijg je 6 maanden gratis en via Shazam kun je vaak 3 maanden gratis krijgen.

Apple geeft uitleg over Apple Music Classical

Apple heeft een supportdocument online gezet, waarin ze uitleggen waarom er een aparte Apple Music Classical-app voor klassieke muziek nodig was. In het kort komt het erop neer dat de metadata bij klassieke muziek veel complexer is:

Klassieke muziek is anders. Het heeft langere en meer gedetailleerde titels, meerdere artiesten voor elk werk, en honderden opnames van bekende stukken. De Apple Music Classical-app is ontworpen om de complexe gegevensstructuur van klassieke muziek te ondersteunen*.

Het supportdocument geeft ook antwoord op veelgestelde vragen over de app, zoals het toevoegen van muziek aan je bibliotheek. Op de pagina over Apple Music Classical is er een wat langere uitleg over het hoe en waarom van de app:

In de klassieke muziek zijn werken vele malen eerder opgenomen, door meerdere musici en onder verschillende namen. Bijvoorbeeld van de officiële Beethovens Pianosonate nr. 14, die in het populaire taalgebruik de bijnaam Moonlight Sonata. Of er kan sprake zijn van meerdere talen, zoals Mondschein Sonata in het Duits. Dergelijke complexiteiten zorgen ervoor dat fans van klassieke muziek slecht worden bediend door de bestaande streaming platformen. Tot nu toe. Met de aparte app, die is inbegrepen bij je Apple Music-abonnement, krijg je als liefhebber van klassieke muziek de redactionele inhoud en catalogus die je altijd al wilde hebben.

Alleen een gloednieuwe app – met gespecialiseerde functies en een prachtige interface ontworpen voor het genre – kan de complexiteit wegnemen en klassieke muziek gemakkelijk doorzoekbaar en toegankelijk maken voor zowel beginners als experts*.

Eerder lekte de naam ‘Apple Classical’ al meermaals uit, onder andere in de beta van iOS-versies en in de Android-versie van de Apple Music-app. In de code waren diverse teksten te vinden die als melding op het scherm zullen verschijnen. Zo word je bij gebruik van de Apple Music-app erop gewezen dat je voor klassieke muziek beter de Apple Music Classic-app kunt gebruiken. De app is dus niet standaard beschikbaar op de iPhone, maar moet iedereen die ernaar wil luisteren apart downloaden in de App Store. Bij veel andere Apple-apps, zoals het onlangs uitgebrachte Freeform, kiest Apple er meestal voor om deze standaard te installeren, al dan niet na een iOS-update.

Waarom een aparte app voor klassieke muziek?

Je vraagt je misschien af waarom Apple een aparte app voor klassieke muziek uitbrengt, in plaats van alles centraal te houden in de standaard Muziek-app. Dat blijkt het duidelijkst als je naar de interface van de oorspronkelijke Primephonic-apps kijkt. Die was helemaal afgestemd op het ontdekken van klassieke muziek en heeft dan ook een andere indeling dan je bij de meeste muziekdiensten gewend bent.

Klassieke stukken worden vaak door meerdere orkesten en solisten gespeeld, soms in verschillende combinaties. Het kan in de Muziek-app erg lastig zijn om die ene versie te vinden. Een aparte app kan meer nadruk leggen op informatie die relevant is voor klassieke muziek zoals componist, periode, stroming of muzieksoort (wals, preludium). Een catalogus met klassieke muziek vraagt om een andere benadering voor het categoriseren van muziek dan muziek. Het is een stuk specialistischer, mede door tracknamen die veel op elkaar lijken.

Een ander punt is dat je klassieke muziekstukken vaak in een vaste volgorde luistert. Het shufflen van nummers is minder gebruikelijk en als je bijvoorbeeld een lange opera afspeelt wil je dat dit zonder pauzes (gapless) tussen de nummers gebeurt.
