iPhone 4 reviews: overzicht van eerste ervaringen van reviewers

Nu de iPhone 4 bij de eerste klanten is gearriveerd eindigde ook de geheimhoudingsplicht van de eerste reviewers, die het toestel vroegtijdig al van Apple kregen. Nieuw is dat naast het gebruikelijke rijtje (Wall Street Journal, USA Today en The New York Times) ook twee blogs de iPhone 4 alvast mochten testen. Gizmodo viel daarbij vanzelfsprekend af, waardoor het in eerste instantie wat vreemd overkomt dat de keuze naast Engadget op Boing Boing is gevallen (en niet Macworld, Cult of Mac of een van de andere typische Apple-sites). We hebben de hoogtepunten uit die reviews op een rijtje gezet.

Wall Street Journal over de iPhone 4

Walt Mossberg heeft de iPhone 4 namens de Wall Street Journal onder handen genomen. Walt memoreert er in zijn review aan dat Apple drie jaar geleden nog niet in de mobiele telefoonbusiness zat. En kijk nu eens: de iPhone is de meest invloedrijke telefoon ter wereld.

Het meest interessante stuk komt meteen aan het begin van het artikel:

I’ve been testing the iPhone 4 for more than a week. In both hardware and software, it is a major leap over its already-excellent predecessor, the iPhone 3GS.

It has some downsides and limitations — most important, the overwhelmed AT&T network in the U.S., which, in my tests, the new phone handled sometimes better and, unfortunately, sometimes worse than its predecessor. I’ll get into that below. But, overall, Apple (AAPL) has delivered a big, well-designed update that, in my view, keeps it in the lead in the smartphone wars.

De iPhone 4 is volgens Walt dus de nieuwe standaard. Maar niet alles bevalt:

After years of complaints, Apple finally has brought multitasking to the iPhone. But it has done so in a limited way that won’t please everyone.

Bij FaceTime beperkt Walt zich tot een feitelijke beschrijving. Moeilijk is het niet: je drukt gewoon op de FaceTime-knop en als de andere persoon accepteert is het videogesprek tot stand gebracht. Verontrustend is het laatste kopje ‘The Big Downside’, maar gelukkig is dat grote nadeel voor Europeanen niet interessant: het feit dat de iPhone nog steeds exclusief via AT&T wordt aangeboden. Het AT&T-netwerk levert altijd problemen op en de databundels zijn niet langer onbeperkt. Het signaal was vaak slecht, maar dat kunnen we misschien de iPhone niet aanrekenen.

New York Times over de iPhone 4

David Pogue schrijft in de New York Times dat de iPhone niet meer de koning van de apps is. Technofielen voelen zich misschien aangetrokken tot de flexibiliteit en de keuze van Android-telefoons, ook al zijn ze lastiger te bedienen en is de softwarewinkel minder goed dan die van de iPhone:

Now, the iPhone is no longer the undisputed king of app phones. In particular, the technically inclined may find greater flexibility and choice among its Android rivals, like the HTC Incredible and Evo. They’re more complicated, and their app store not as good, but they’re loaded with droolworthy features like turn-by-turn GPS instructions, speech recognition that saves you typing, removable batteries and a choice of cell networks.
If what you care about, however, is size and shape, beauty and battery life, polish and pleasure, then the iPhone 4 is calling your name.

Pogue is te spreken over het uiterlijk van de iPhone 4, maar klaagt ook dat je in je broekzak niet meer weet wat de voor- en achterkant is:

The result is beautiful, and since there’s no more plastic, it feels solid and Lexus-like. But it no longer feels like a soothing worry stone, and it’s now impossible to tell by touch which way it’s facing in your pocket. The new metal mute and volume buttons are much stiffer.

Pogue noemt als drie belangrijkste verbeteringen multitasking, de nieuwe app switcher en de mogelijkheid om applicaties in folders onder te brengen.

USA Today over de iPhone 4

Vaste reviewer Ed Baig van USA Today beweert de iPhone 4 al wat langer in handen te hebben: anderhalve week. Volgens hem moeten zelfs de grootste critici toegeven dat de iPhone de standaard is waarmee andere smartphones worden vergeleken en de nieuwe iPhone 4 demonstreert opnieuw dat “Apple’s handset is the one to beat” ook al neemt de concurrentie van Android toe.

Hij gaat wat dieper in op FaceTime:

Buyers won’t be disappointed. The killer feature is what Apple calls FaceTime video chat. […] No one has really nailed video calling through the years, at least not the way Apple has nailed it here, with certain limitations. FaceTime is as simple as making a regular call. To help to accomplish this neat stunt, iPhone 4 adds a front-facing camera that complements the more traditional, and improved, camera on the back.

Na een bespreking van foto’s en video’s, iBooks, multitasking, folders e-mail en batterij concludeert Baig:

As with previous iPhones, the latest model breaks new ground. FaceTime video calling on the iPhone 4 is one of those cool “seeing is believing” features, and it arrives on top of several across-the-board enhancements. And iOS 4 is a mostly terrific software upgrade.
Cutting through the hype, Apple has given longtime diehards, and first-time iPhone owners, plenty to cheer about.

Engadget over de iPhone 4

Engadget stuurde hoofdredacteur Joshua Topolsky (of beter gezegd: Topolsky stuurde zichzelf) op pad met de iPhone. Hij constateert dat het reviewen van de iPhone 4 geen gemakkelijke taak is. De lancering van de iPhone is een groot evenement, voorafgegaan door geruchten, speculaties en maanden wachten. De verwachtingen zijn daardoor hoog gespannen.

Engadget gaat als gadgetblog, in vergelijking met de algemene kranten, vanzelfsprekend wat dieper in op design, interne componenten en andere technische details. Zelfs de Bumper-cases komen aan de orde (waarbij trouwens blijkt dat de Bumpers toch geen veredelde rubberen stootbanden zijn, maar daadwerkelijk een achterkant hebben). Topolsky besluit zijn verhaal met:

We’re not going to beat around the bush — in our approximation, the iPhone 4 is the best smartphone on the market right now. The combination of gorgeous new hardware, that amazing display, upgraded cameras, and major improvements to the operating system make this an extremely formidable package.

Yes, there are still pain points that we want to see Apple fix, and yes, there are some amazing alternatives to the iPhone 4 out there. But when it comes to the total package — fit and finish in both software and hardware, performance, app selection, and all of the little details that make a device like this what it is — we think it’s the cream of the current crop.

Topolsky geeft toe dat het een kwestie van smaak is: sommige mensen zullen liever een Android of een Symbian kopen, anderen zijn praktisch ingesteld en willen een smartphone met een hardware-toetsenbordje, ongeacht op welk besturingssysteem het draait. Maar als je naar het totale plaatje kijkt is Apple de concurrentie weer een stap voor. Maar voor hoe lang?

Boing Boing over de iPhone 4

Boing Boing is een weblog dat het gewone publiek niet zal kennen. Het voormalige magazine is ontstaan uit de cyberpunk-cultuur en is tegenwoordig een niet-commerciële groepsblog over allerlei online zaken. Terwijl je bij het openen van Engadget.com wordt gebombardeerd met ‘iPhone 4, The Engadget Review’ moet je bij Boing Boing even zoeken waar ze de review hebben verstopt. Xeni Jardin is te spreken over de batterijduur:

With very heavy video recording and playback, instant messaging, email and data tethering over 3G, I got a full day of battery life.
I can’t provide specific percentages, but it felt like the battery life was a good 20-25% meatier.

Waarom Jardin geen percentages kon aflezen is wat onduidelijk maar in zijn conclusie is hij in ieder geval duidelijk: dit is geen revolutie, de iPhone 4 en het bijbehorende iOS 4 wekken niet de indruk dat het complete vernieuwingen zijn, maar moeten meer gezien worden als tweaks.

The fourth incarnation of Apple’s iPhone is an incrementally improved, familiar device — not a new kind of device, as was the case with the recent introduction of iPad. Yes, the notable features with iPhone 4 — both the device and the iOS4, which came out yesterday in advance of the iPhone itself — are mostly tweaks. But what tweaks they are: Apple’s focus on improvement is as much key to the quality of its products as innovation. But there’s one flaw it can’t completely eliminate: the unreliable quality of calls placed over AT&T, which remains the iPhone’s only U.S. carrier. … Would I buy it? Yes.

Ook hier dus: de telefoon mag dan nog wel zo goed zijn, het feit dat de iPhone 4 alleen bij het onbetrouwbare AT&T verkrijgbaar is, werpt er toch een schaduw op.
