iPhone 5c: dit vindt de internationale pers

Tijdens de presentatie van de iPhone 5c en de iPhone 5s konden verschillende media met de toestellen aan de slag. We publiceerden eerder een overzicht van de hands-on impressies van websites die een eerste indruk kregen van beide smartphones. Een echt oordeel kwam er nog niet, met name omdat Apple een embargo instelde op publicatie van reviews. Inmiddels is het embargo verstreken en komen de websites met hun beoordelingen. In dit overzicht vind je een aantal quotes en links naar interessante reviews van de iPhone 5c.

Op TechCrunch vindt men dat de terugkeer naar plastic het imago van Apple niet heeft beschadigd. Vooral door het stalen frame, dat ook dienst doet als antenne, voelt de smartphone solide aan.

In fact the iPhone 5c is slightly heavier than the iPhone 5s, weighing in at 132g vs. 112g for the all-metal flagship iPhone. The added weight gives it a nice heft; it’s just a shade lighter than the iPhone 4S, which lends it a feeling of substance. The material of the case, while glossy and smooth, doesn’t feel prone to slipping from your grip, and the rounded edges and corners are also a very nice fit for the contours of your hand.

Ook iOS 7 lijkt op maat gemaakt voor de iPhone 5c. Als je de iPhone 5c uit de verpakking haalt, komen het lock screen en de achtergrond overeen met de kleur van de telefoon.

It gives the 5c a subtle, ‘your own phone, right out of the box’ type of feel, which is ideal for a device that seems to be aimed at a very broad group of users who might not be instantly comfortable or familiar with customization options.

AllThingsD noemt de iPhone 5c min of meer een verbeterde iPhone 5, maar dat is volgens de site niet per se een probleem. Wel zullen de fanatieke iPhone-gebruikers eerder voor de iPhone 5s gaan. Ook AllThingsD is onder de indruk van de behuizing van de iPhone 5c:

It’s just slightly thicker and heavier than the iPhone 5. And while the 5c isn’t as refined-looking as the iPhone 5 or the new 5s, it isn’t a tacky plastic phone, either. I’ve tested plastic phones before, including the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the new Moto X from Motorola, and this phone feels more solid in the hand. Call quality was good.

De New York Times ziet wel waarom de iPhone 5c een succes wordt.

It’s a terrific phone. The price is right. It will sell like hot cakes; the new iPhones go on sale Friday. But just sheathing last year’s phone in shiny plastic isn’t a stunning advance.

Jim Dalrymple schrijft op The Loop dat hij aangenaam verrast was door de bouwkwaliteit van de iPhone 5c. Hij voelt volgens hem net zo stevig aan als de iPhone 5s.

The iPhone 5c doesn’t actually feel like plastic. It’s strange when you first pick it up, but it almost feels like ceramic or a similar material that is glossy and hard. The manufacturing process that Apple used to make this phone and the metal reinforcement it used in the plastic casing certainly worked on making this phone tough.

The iPhone 5c takes over from the iPhone 5, filling that spot in the product line-up. In fact, the 5c is basically the iPhone 5 with some updated components like a new FaceTime HD Camera and colors.

Volgens Engadget is de iPhone 5c gewoon een iPhone 5 met betere frontcamera en LTE-ondersteuning, maar de website is wel erg onder de indruk van het uiterlijk van de telefoon.

We’re not going to lie. The iPhone 5c is gorgeous — we’d even argue that it’s the most beautiful iPhone since the 4 and 4s. It instantly makes the iPhone 5 and 5s look staid in comparison. Sure, we prefer materials like aluminum and glass over plastic, and we appreciate the intricate craftsmanship that goes into building the iPhone 5 and 5s, but still, we can’t help it — the 5c just triggers some reptilian part of our brains that screams, “OMG, color!” It brings a breath of fresh air to the iPhone lineup and will appeal to consumers at an emotional level. As such, we predict the 5c is going to be wildly popular this holiday season.

Engadget heeft op ook benchmarks uitgevoerd en gaat wat dieper in op de geluidskwaliteit en de batterijduur. De website is ook erg enthousiast over de cameraprestaties van de iPhone 5c in combinatie met de nieuwe foto-app in iOS 7. Het heeft ook een testvideo gemaakt.

It produces lovely pictures with lots of detail, vibrant colors, accurate exposure and proper white balance. Panoramas are particularly impressive. Best of all, it does this consistently — anyone can take great photos with the 5c, something we can’t say about every other device.

Op Cnet staat ook een review van de iPhone 5c en worden benchmarks vergeleken met concurrerende toestellen. Natuurlijk zijn de prestaties niet zo indrukwekkend als die van de iPhone 5S, maar ze achten de telefoon door zijn technische kwaliteiten en uiterlijk geschikt voor een breed publiek:

AnandTech heeft een zeer uitgebreide review waarin naast wat inzichten in de strategie van Apple ook veel aandacht wordt besteed aan de technische kwaliteiten van de iPhone 5c. Naast uitgebreide benchmarks wordt ook nog benadrukt dat de iPhone 5c je gratis software laat downloaden:

Apple also recently made iPhoto, iMovie and its iWork suite free for anyone who buys a new iPhone preloaded with iOS 7 (the iPhone 5c and 5s). The list includes iPhoto, iMovie, Pages, Numbers and Keynote, a pretty substantial collection given how much Apple used to charge for all of them in the past ($40 total). Apple is clearly mimicking its successful Mac strategy here, leveraging software as a way to sell hardware. I’m actually surprised the five apps don’t come preloaded on the 5c, although I wouldn’t be too shocked to see that change in the future.
